Title: Executive Director for the Madison River Foundation

Reports to: Executive Committee, MRF Board of Directors

Location:​ The MRF offices are located in Ennis, Montana

The Mission: The Madison River Foundation is dedicated to the well-being of the Madison River watershed through conservation, protection and restoration; also, we will sustain a balanced and cooperative relationship between its neighboring ranchers, farmers, anglers and businesses for the success of the Valley.  While working together, we will return more cold, clean water back to the river.

Description​: The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the MRF ensuring that we are operating effectively to meet organizational goals. As the face of the MRF, the Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors and our Partners. The Executive Director will ensure that staff members are aligned with the organization’s mission and vision and that we are working together to successfully achieve strategic objectives. The MRF has a culture that places a high priority on positive leadership, communication, recognition and collaboration. 

Desired Skills, experience and background 

Qualifications may be met by any combination of education and experience that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the job description. Typically, the Executive Director will have graduated from an accredited college with a major in wilderness management, fisheries biology, recreation, natural resource management, outdoor education or a closely related field and have at least ​two​ years of experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity. 

The ideal Executive Director candidate will possess the following skills: 

● Knowledge and experience with programs related or similar to the Madison River Foundation’s mission, vision, goals and objectives. 

● Experience with a government agency, outdoor program, or non-profit organization. 

● Fundraising experience, grant writing, and financial management skills. 

● Proficient computer skills including Word, Excel, website and database applications (to include Social Media platforms).

● Experience in membership management and donor relations.

Additional experience that would be desirable for this position: 

● Experience in volunteer management. 

● Knowledge of river maintenance and aquatic construction projects. 

● Knowledge of the Madison Valley, its river system and management of the resource. 

● Collaboration with similar organizations (for-profit, and non-profit) on projects.

Key Job Functions 

Leadership and Management 

● Actively engage and energize MRF volunteers, board members, partnering organizations and donors. 

● Work with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach. 

● Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities, both in project concepts and implementation, while networking with similar organizations. 

● Manage and motivate a high-performing staff and oversee day-to-day operations. 

Fundraising

● Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan while playing a significant role in building annual, major and planned giving programs with BOD.

● Build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with new donors, political and community leaders. 

● Assist with creating content for print and digital marketing materials. 

Finance 

● Develop an annual budget for board review and update as needed throughout the year based on fundraising and grant income. 

● Collaborate with staff, partners and BOD to plan annual budget needs. 

● Oversee monthly bookkeeping duties as carried out by MRF accountant services. 

● Create annual, quarterly and monthly financial reports with the BOD.

Grant Management 

● Manage and research grant application process to secure funding for volunteer programs and administrative costs (ALONG WITH STAFF).

● Collaborate with STAFF on research and writing grants. 

Project Management 

● Work with our Partner Organizations to ensure volunteer projects for the upcoming season are funded (Bear Camp, other Foundations and Groups, etc.).

● Participate in annual meetings with our Partners management staff to plan future projects. 

● Participate on volunteer projects when possible/applicable. 

Board 

● Attend MRF Board Meetings and develop the agenda. 

● Collaborate with the board on the development of policies. 

● Assist in training new board members. 

● Manage and help develop board strategic planning. 

Requirements 

Some travel and weekend availability is required; use of your personal vehicle will be necessary with mileage reimbursement at the MRF annual rate. 

Salary 

Salary is assigned based on experience. Annual pay raises are based on merit.
